Community Garden

Community-based, organic gardening in the heart of Ocean Beach

About OBCG

The Ocean Beach Community Garden is located in the Ocean Beach community of San Diego. Started in the late 70s, the garden has been home to hundreds of conscientious gardeners who strive to be the most responsible and respectful stewards of the land. Situated on 1.5 acres, the garden offers 50 individual plots with spaces to grow in an organic, chemical-free environment.

In 1978, the Ocean Beach Community Garden first planted roots in an empty lot on Brighton Street in OB. The founder, Jesse Schwartz, Ph.D., a former college professor, was a visionary who saw streets lined with fruit trees and front yards filled with vegetable garden beds. The vision spoke to the ability and availability to grow food and share in the art of gardening.

After one year of successful operation on Brighton Street, the OB Community Garden relocated to its current location on Soto Street, adjacent to Collier Park. It has been situated at the west end of the park ever since. The original group of ambitious gardeners included Schwartz, who organized the dedicated group of young people, that included local OB resident, Stephanie Mood, who continues in the garden’s legacy today. Mood is an active organic gardener on her home plot in Ocean Beach, is a community activist, and is still involved with the community garden through her active participation in garden events. The original guiding principle of OBCG was to garden collectively for the benefit of not only themselves but the community at large. To date, it is believed that the Ocean Beach Community Garden is the longest, continuously operating community garden on City of San Diego property.
